From appraisal #10193 by William E. Merchant on 10/18/04:
The instrument has a top of 6 pieces of medium grain spruce with violin corners. The flat back is made of one piece of clear plywood. The ribs do not match the back and there are no outside liners present. There is a single inlaid purfling in the top table(s). The new neck is made from well flamed maple and has an ebony fingerboard and replacement plate tuning gears made of engraved brass with brass pegs. The orange-brown oil varnish is a refinish and is in good condition with minimal matching touching up.
The bass was cut down completely, only the C bout purfling is original. The plywood back is a replacement. The maker’s label and 3 repair labels are re-glued to the center crossbar, from 1891 & 1971.
The bass was made in England circa 1850 and is in good condition. The maker is William Gilkes. Current market value is, in my estimation, $85,000 usd.
